Skyfire does not doubt his and Perceptor's ability to get them home eventually; he'd just like to have a comfortable base here and now. Behind the genial, cold-hearted treasure hunter's exterior lurks a scientific mind as brilliant as Perceptor's, just inclined in different directions. Skyfire is one of the few who does not just understand what Perceptor says, but can converse intelligently and productively with him about his theories. He does, as Oracle observed, like his creature comforts.
Skyfire had worked with Oracle often enough to know that when she shouted 'Duck' for no obvious reason, you'd damn well better duck. 'Cover your optics' was another one that called for fast reactions. He flung one hand over his optics, splayed another over his cockpit sensors, and cut his optical feed internally.
"At least it's not a surprise solar flare from a blue giant this time," Skyfire muttered as he restored his optical feed. His visual processors might be fine, but the sensors themselves were still a bit dazzled; hands don't shield quite well enough from the likes of Sunbeam.
He is aware of Oracle's abrupt departure. "I'll bet you half the expedition is overreacting because they got a little flash in their optics," Skyfire comments to Perceptor. He continues with some exasperation, "One of these days we're going to get suckered into a really nasty trap because we've got so many hair-trigger types who'd rather shoot than think."
It was an old gripe of Skyfire's that he confined to Perceptor and Oracle's audials. He turned to check his pet for damage. "TC, run level one optical diagnostics and give me the results."
"I wonder how much fixing Needlenose would take to make a good pet," Skyfire wondered aloud. "Perceptor, do you think traumatic separation from his weapons will make him more docile or is it more likely to ruin him for future usefulness?"
"One more thing--do you want me to transport you and follow them to the capture point? Prime hasn't give us specific orders yet, and I got what I wanted from here, so... I'm basically at your disposal for the moment."
