Kup stares at Mayday and says something gruffly that is no less than absolute truth, "Yeah. I risked everything for him. And I'd have done the same for you."
He straightens and drops his hold on Mayday. That's really just how G1 cartoon Autobots roll, for the most part. Kup looks tiredly over at Botanica. They really are doing good cop/bad cop, aren't they?
Kup adds, after a moment, "Maybe I would have doomed everyone, but if I did nothing, I sure as shooting would have doomed Rodimus. And that's the thing. One time, I saw a fight between the Autobot and Decepticon commanders then. Everyone was staying out of it like it was some kind of duel, like it ain't a war we're fighting, winner takes all. Now, our leader, he looked like he had the upper hand, but that dirty Decepticon – he was just faking. So a damn punk kid stepped in and tried to warn our leader."
Kup looks down. "Our leader ent up dead anyway. But the kid tried, and that was more than any of us did."

At first, Mayday isn't sure what Botanica's getting at, but the moment he realizes that her altered look is Cosmic Rust related rather than just some strange techno-organic quirk, he gets a decidedly queasy look. Sick and injured people have always made him uncomfortable, from even before his paranoia really set in. He looks away from the datapad and forces the feeling away.
"S-so he changed it-" Because what they all needed was an even worse version Cosmic Rust, really. "But I, nh, I didn't know that..."
After that he goes silent and lets Botanica and Kup say their parts, sagging against the wall. He's confused about how to feel right now. Apparently he has valid points - but he knows he hadn't really been thinking at the time, so does that even matter? Apparently Rodimus is special and worth the risk of all of them, but Kup would still have taken the risk for Mayday? He can't understand that. He's not worth it, and if he was anyone else he wouldn't save himself.
And... and they don't want him to leave. Or at least Botanica doesn't. It's hard to believe.
It's too much to sort through right now, and so he settles for just feeling tired. "I don't understand soldiers," he says, finally. "I just... understand ships."
"So what now?"

"No, you didn't know that," Botanica says softly but firmly, "You were reacting out of blind panic. Even if afterward you can rationalize your actions, what you did during the battle was inexcusable."
"You are needed, Mayday. You know more about this ship's workings than nearly any of use, more, you understand it. But we can't have this happen again. We simply can't."
She sighs and rubs her temples, "You may not understand soldiers- Matrix knows I don't- but you must understand how one imperfect solder line can disrupt a entire circuit board. We'll not forcibly change you, but you must go through some training to make you better able to handle these types of situations."
Botanica turns to Kup, "His duty roster is free from <time> to <time> each day. He's yours during that time, and you have full authority over him for those periods."

So Mayday didn't know it was contagious, and Mayday was willing to condemn Rodimus Prime to death over something Mayday thought was non-contagious. Coward.
Kup holds his hands up and admits, when Botanica gives him Mayday, "To be honest, I reckon what he could most use is time in medical, to get exposed to sick 'n damaged folks and see it won't kill 'im after all. Matrix knows, Perceptor runs himself ragged and could use the help. But if you'd rather have me wrangle him, I can figure something out."
Kup turns an appraising gaze on Mayday, sharp as a hawk.
So, does Mayday want the devil he knows, of volunteer work in medical, or does Mayday prefer the devil he doesn't, that is Kup getting 'creative'?
"Or we could split the difference."
Or both.

"Yes," he says quietly, accepting Botanica's summary and judgment. Of course he's a coward; he ran from his entire planet once, leaving everyone behind. Wrapping his arms around his torso, his fingers twitch. His plating is beginning to itch where Kup touched it, and while he knows- or thinks, or hopes... no, knows - that it's all in his head, it's a feeling that'll only go away after giving himself a thorough cleaning.
His head snaps up with an eloquent, "Guh?" as Botanica hands over a chunk of his free time to Kup. His expression isn't quite one of sheer terror, but it comes close. Nooo, he doesn't want to spend more time with Kup! Kup is scary and clearly dislikes him!
He gives an even more eloquent "Nuh!" as Kup tries to foist him on medical and Perceptor. His expression gets just that more terrified looking. He doesn't want to spend time with Perceptor either! He's too ashamed to. And being around sick and broken people! Just imagining it is enough to make his knees shake.
He's used up his daily allotment of defiance, however, and so he just makes whining noises.

Botanica cuts her eyes toward Kup and smiles slightly. Mayday is quite hot potato, isn't he?
"I like your suggestion, actually. One day on in Medical, one day on with you. Perceptor, Swerve, and Skyfire do need the help, especially with my being out of commission, and I'm sure you can come up with some interesting training scenarios for Mayday."
She looks back to Mayday, "So that is the agreement, Mayday, and I am entering your new training shifts into the system now."
"Any questions?"

"Been a while since I had to build someone out of fear," Kup says lowly, cutting his optics over at Mayday appraisingly. Breaking someone into fear is relatively easy. Any Decepticon hack torturer can do it. Building someone back up out of that hole? That is hard.
Hard's never stopped Kup.
Then he looks back to Botanica and grins, "Oh yeah. I sure can give him some interesting times."
Any good soldier hates interesting times.

"Nnh-nh," is all the response Mayday can manage as he tries to sink into the wall, giving Botanica a slight shake of his head.
He doesn't need to be a soldier to realize that Kup's idea of interesting times isn't something he'd ever wish to encounter. This is not going to be fun. This is not going to be fun at all.
