Oh if it's horrible and embarrassing, it'll probably happen to Drift. After all, he got the robosnot kicked out of him by a zombie. Not something he wants in his highlight reel.
Yyyyyyyeah, that wasn't it. "Fewer to get hurt if I screw up," he corrected. He can handle variables. Mostly because he is a variable. He can't handle someone getting hurt because of his recklessness. Not enough to stop being reckless, but still, it's, uh, it's the thought that counts?
Oh, speaking of embarrassing things? Drift almost gets caught in Mirage's little leg trap. Enough to stumble heavily to one side, but he manages not to go down. Barely. "Cute," he mutters, coming up from the stumble with a sword slash.

Mirage smirks slightly. He may get the wiring beaten out of him during this encounter, but Mirage expects he is going to learn quite a lot about Drift in the process that the swordsmech didn't intend. Like that little admission. "That is pretty much what I just said." He just said it in a less telling manner.
"I'll not have others I care about getting hurt, not when I've the ability to protect them," he continues as he rolls over and up onto one knee. Mirage swings one hand up to meet the slashing sword, attempting to catch or deflect the slash with the small blade now grasped in his fist. "Even if means I, myself, tend to be considered expendable."
"Hrm. Perhaps I should have booked the sim room," he adds, frowning slightly.

Well, there's a reason the 'cons kept Deadlock to front line combat. he's expendable! He's terrible at diplomacy, tact, or circumspection. So Mirage better not count this as any deep impressive victory that Drift says dumb and unguarded things.
But don't think you've won, Mirage, because Drift is going to correct your correction. Ha HA smartypants. "Don't have to 'care' about them to save their lives." He'd freed those Autobot prisoners, saved his Perceptor, because they were there.
Mirage catches the blade. Fast. Drift will give him that. But not strong. Drift jerks the blade free, twisting it out of Mirage's hand.
"Really. You? Expendable? All that fancy tech? High born education?" Seriously. The expendable were the gutter crawlers. Drift, for example.
Drift doesn't want a sim room. He gives a grin. "Too much for you?"

Mirage gets a nice slice on his palm for his trouble, nothing too deep or troubling, like a papercut to a human. Hurts like a mother, too, just like a papercut. He's got those stereotypical sensitive sniper's hands, after all.
He jumps back, out of sword reach again, hating to give Drift the benefit of distance, but needing to for a moment. From subspace, he pulls a small roll of metal tape, wraps his hand with said tape a few times, then returns the roll to subspace. Drift may laugh at Mirage for being a wuss, but the pressure of the tape will actually help temper the sharpness of the cut.
"No, one save lives because it's the right thing to do as defined by one's personal ethics," Mirage counters, circling once more, "Just as one takes lives when it is necessary in accordance with the same."
"Also," Mirage adds, voice soft and slightly sad, "it is not one's place in society, one's physical abilities, or one's education that makes one indispensable to one's community."
"It is whether you will be missed when you are gone."
"I tend to try to avoid making work for Medical when it isn't necessary, but if you're after my fuel, I can certainly accommodate- just know I'll not be the only injured when this is done."
Won't that be lovely, the both of them going to Medical together? (Because Mirage would totally drag Drift there if he had to.) Perceptor can flail and fret over both of them at once.

Drift lowers his sword from guard, mouth quirked in a disdaining line, as Mirage jumps back to manage his little boo-boo. Impactor knew how to take a hit. Give one, too, Drift remembered--a little TOO well. This was just...prissy.
"All better now?" Oh he's trying out some condescension for his Combat Repartee. Primus knows everything else has failed.
His optics narrow at Mirage's speech. That's what HE said, thanks. Just because Mirage made it sounds...sleeker meant nothing. And the last little bit? About being missed when gone?
"Guess I'm pretty dispensible then." If that's even a word.
"Not trying to kill you. Maybe you should explain more clearly what you want from me." Because yeah, he's had the same thought about medbay too, and no. Just....no.

Mirage's optics narrow at the condescension, but the spy doesn't rise to the bait. Well, not that one, at least. The spy can't let the next opening slide.
"Oh, I'd argue the point. I'd wager that there's at least one person- somewhere- who would miss you were you gone, and that is all it takes to make you indispensable, at least in his- or her- eyes."
Mirage can't help it. When Drift makes his "not trying to kill you" comment, Mirage stops his circle and laughs, bringing his hand up to his forehead and rubbing his temple.
"Drift, there are many stages of spar between 'no injury' and 'kill.' I trend toward lower damage spars, for the aforementioned reason, and because most of the melee opponents on the ship don't have melee weaponry that can do heavy damage." Or can't use it well. "But I am certainly up for anything that falls short of true incapacitation, or would require more than moderate repairs."
"But if we're going to go pretty much no holds barred, we should both be able to use whatever advantages we can bring to bear."

Well, damn. Drift will have to try harder.
He stops, staring at Mirage for a long moment. Was the spy trying to say something about Perceptor? Or was Drift just being paranoid.
Nope. Paranoid. Drift shakes it off. Just as ducks shake off water, Drifts can shed subtlety and nuance.
"Lot of mechs who actively want me dead. Maybe they'd miss that." Turmoil had seemed rather...gleeful that he hadn't missed out on the chance to kill Drift himself.
Oh, laughing's a good strategy, Mirage. If you like hearing Drift growl. "You 'trend' to low damage because you're weak. What's the point of learning to defend against little jabs and pokes? They aren't going to kill you." It's the big 'lop your head off' things Drift thinks mechs should practice.
But fine. You have a point. And maybe Perceptor would give him That Look if he chopped up Mirage. It would seem awfully....satisfying obvious. He gives another growl, flipping the blade in his grip so that the flat edge is the attack side. What more do you want from him!?!?
"Bring it."

Mirage stiffens when Drift calls him weak. He may have been able to ignore the previous slight, but Mirage is getting very, very tired of the other mech equating Mirage's lack of thick armor or melee weapons and skill with weakness.
"Drift, I am growing very, very weary of being insulted, just because you're so insecure in your own plating that you can't accept that weakness has not a Chaos-damned thing to do with one's build or weaponry."
"If you think I need practice in defending against an earnest attack, then it is you who should move first," Mirage says, "Or are you so intimidated by me that you will only defend?"
Mirage's stance has switched from stiff to easy, but the challenge in his optics is clear. Drift's been wanting this. Mirage can certainly oblige.

Drift shrugs. Yeah, well, 'weak' is sort of Drift's...thing. Not, uh, his thing like that! Sort of more like....his anti-thing.
Real mechs get angry when insulted, not tired, Mirage. "Sorry to exhaust you so much." Not really. "If it mattered, you'd do what I did: Fight for better armor, better weapons. Earn your modifications." Everything, ANYTHING, Drift has, he's earned. He's implying....you haven't.
Implying? Yeah, subtle as a hammer, our Drift.
"Don't want to break you, pretty bot, which is why I haven't attacked." But he does respond--like one would expect--to the insult, making a fast lunge with one blade, aiming for the spy's arm He's still aiming the flat of the blade, so if it hits, it will only make a solid thump. And maybe, maybe, if Drift's been a good little mech, leave a nasty dent.

Mirage thought he understood the reason for Drift's animosity. It was an animosity Mirage had experienced before, that of a lesser societal member angered by the presence of one who obviously had more at their disposal. Mirage thought that by bringing up their similarities, by trying to show that they have common ground, he could lessen that animosity.
Now Mirage is starting to think Drift has a more personal issue with him, and Mirage has no idea what it might be. That Drift is jealous of Mirage in regards to Perceptor hasn't really entered into the spy's mind; hence, Mirage feels as if he is being wronged by one without any right to the action.
So rather than respond to Drift's verbal jabs, the spy responds to the physical ones. Drift's blow will hit, and yes, will dent. However, before the blow even lands, Mirage steps slightly into it. One hand darts out to try and grasp Drift's sword arm by the elbow and twist it to the outside. At the same time, Mirage sweeps the leg opposite in an attempt to hook Drift's leg and take him down. His free hand? Is trying to help Drift on the way down by way of a full-force punch to the middle of the mech's pretty face.
The takedown move Mirage learned from Oracle. The punch, Mirage adds because if it connect it will be oh so satisfying.

Sorry, Mirage, but you're everything Drift hates, rolled up into a pretty blue sneaky package. It's totally not personal.
Ummm, except for the Perceptor thing. But that's part of the deal--Drift's nerd. You have enough stuff. Get your own nerd and let Drift, who's got nothing, have this one.
Drift sees the ankle sweep and lets it take him anyway. Go ahead and close the distance, Mirage. Drift won't mind. He even lets the punch land, refusing, using his powers of Manliness, to show that it even hurt. He even dares to hope it breaks your widdle hand.
And guess what you get in return? Oh you should have seen this coming, Mirage. Face for a face. Justice. Have Deadlock's patented headbutt to the face.

Drift is a Taurus, isn't he? >_>
Mirage's hand doesn't break, but he has to admit to himself that it certainly smarts. Drift's armor is apparently stronger than it looks. But Mirage also knows his own strength (which is the same as Drift's), and Mirage is pretty darn sure Drift felt that blow, Manliness or no Manliness.
Mirage manages to turn his head just in time, so that the Patented Headbutt hits the side of his head and not his face. Mirage could have played his own Manilines card, but really, he does have fragile armor, and he'd rather not risk a blinding this early. As it is, Drift has certainly spoiled the aristocrat's classic profile.
It appears to be Grappling Time!
OOC: How do you feel about doing some montage-ish style timeskips through some of the nitty-gritty combat? Basically, each time they "break," they've each obviously taken hits, and maybe they snark a bit before going back at each other's throats? Also, sent you a PM. >_>

Oh Drift feels the hit. But it will be a blinding bright bikini party in space before he gives Mirage the satisfaction. It's true: he really is that petty.
And the same doodly doodly magical timeskip montage with 80s rock anthem of choice--Drift prefers 'Eye of the Tiger' for all the other hits Mirage managed to land. Which weren't many, but still as far as Drift is concerned, too many.
They'd gone to the floor, and Drift got some satisfaction hoping Prettybot felt all squicked by the germs. He shoves them apart with one foot. "Learning anything useful yet?" he snaps.
((ooc: is this kind of what you meant?))

OOC: That is exactly what I meant. Thanks
If Drift only knew. Mirage has been in sewers that would make the ones Drift crawled out of look clean. He'll not scare Mirage off by the power of grime alone.
Mirage rolls away and come up on one knee in one easy, graceful motion. At least, he manages to keep it looking easy and graceful. Mirage hurts, and he's sporting more damage than he's ever taken before in something that was supposed to be a friendly spar. Whoever is in medical is going to give him an audial-full about using the sim room next time. Still, not all of Drift's hits landed, and perhaps that is surprising to the other mech. More than likely it just pisses him off and makes him hate Mirage more.
"Yes," Mirage drawls, wiping a smear of fluid from the corner of his mouth, "You hold your right a bit too wide, you plow through when you should use finesse, and," Mirage chuckles darkly, "you are entirely too easy to provoke." Which is what Mirage is doing now, his words- not necessarily full truth- calculated to keep Drift off balance.
"Also, you seem to not like me very much at all, even though I was nothing but courteous to you in the beginning. I tried civility and friendship, and was given nothing but attitude back. I am rather curious as to why. There is more than a simple envy of my supposedly better-than-yours origins here."
Mirage pushes himself back to a standing position. He's favoring his left leg slightly.
"Oh, but you meant in general. Yes, it has proven most informative. Are you willing to try me cloaked, or are you still too unsure of yourself?"
There's a wicked glint of challenge in Mirage's optics. He knows full well he's pushing, and for Perceptor's sake, Mirage should probably back off now. But... Mirage was attempting to be friendly with Drift, and Drift was a consummate ass. So frag it.

It's pretty amazing that Drift is losing so abjectly. He's forgotten...everything from New Crystal City. Mirage is right about one thing: he's too easy to provoke, obviously.
He forces a vent, his nasal plating twitching. "I don't owe you anything. Least of all an explanation."
Just something else the spy would exploit, anyway. Still it's good for Drift to hear this: he won't succumb to temper around the blue mech again.
Yeah, Mirage has been a peach. No 'consummate aft' here with that 'too unsure' crack.
"Only thing I'm unsure of is not accidentally killing you since I can't see where I'm aiming."
