I think I'm just going to drop out of chat, honestly. I really hate IRC. Links do not work for me at all in IRC, and I have trouble following what's going on in IRC. However, AIM is horrible for everyone else, so... have fun with IRC.

I think I'll have to drop out of chat as well. I really don't have any idea how to handle IRC (that and my computer is fritzing and low on memory so downloading a new software isn't really a good idea) and most of my friends are on AIM anyways. Since I primarily use only the IM function, the inability to link in a chatroom doesn't bother me too much and it's not too much trouble to IM someone a link if I have to.

Argh!
Not that I can do anything about it or anything, but I've got to say that I'm pretty infuriated with AIM in general just for forcing us into this position. :/ I BADLY want to boycot those f***ers right now, but can't even do that. ARGH!
Dammit.
Question: would some sort of web-based applet that doesn't require downloading be acceptable, or are we going to lose people going that route, too?

If you know your coding, you MIGHT be able to whip up a Shoutbox or java applet thing for the forum, however that has its own problems associated with it
If you're interested, I might see if I can scavenge a "How to" at the very least, or find some forums where they've worked, but they're veritable magnets for spambots
I could also ask my friend who owes me a favor over at the Warcraft 3 website I moderate if he'd let us hog a channel to ourselves, seeing as no one actually uses the damn channel thing, but that'd involve all you guys having to join a Warcraft 3 forum that I rule with an iron fist, unless he can hook it up to a special thing where you don't have to
Or... I guess we could try hooking up a Java Applet for the IRC chat to see if that fixes a few of the problems with IRC? They're designed to only work on a single IRC server, but they can join other channels, and they use Java, which is a pretty common thing on most computers for accessing web-based content. Problem being that it's still IRC

A curious anomaly about AIM:
Myself and two others were using an AIM chatroom with someone using Meebo, and they could paste links just fine, and we could paste as well and they show up, but going into DZchat, they wouldn't work. And we had someone in chat yesterday that was using Meebo, and links still didn't work.
Weird...not really productive to the conversation, but something that's relevant and rather strange.

We'll see. I'm thinking about running another poll, only handling it in a different manner. In the last poll, I asked what people preferred to use. If the object is to include as many people as possible, that was the wrong question. Let's say that most people prefer to use chat program Z, but all those who prefer that program are still willing to use chat program Q. Meanwhile, those who prefer chat program Q either can not or will not use Z at all. If that's the case, Q, while less popular, is actually the choice to go with, because everyone at least is still chatting.
Our polls now allow us to set it so that multiple options can be picked, so that's what I think I'm going to do. Make a, "Which of the following are you unable to use/will you refuse to use?" poll, and let people pick multiple options. The one that gets voted for the least would probably be the best bet.
I just... *exasperated sigh.* Just don't know. I'm really resentful over this recent change in AIM protocol.

I'm not consciously trying to drop out of chat. I go to sleep around 7 or 8 PM eastern to be up again for 3 AM. I just tend to forget to sign on to AIM or IRC.
My only problem with IRC is that it doesn't flash when there's a new message, as AIM does. So I tend to forget about it, then completely lose track of what's going on.

That's also my main issue with IRC, I just sorta forget I'm using it and go about doing other things and ignoring people who might want to talk with me.

Luna, get a newer version of Trillian and links & stuff might work. OR try Pidgin.
Jess, Jabber is another option. The multi-protocol clients like Trillian & Pidgin support it, (it's also what LJtalk uses). I believe my webhosting service lets me set up a Jabber server if I want to.
I just want to use something that works and everyone is happy with. I *was* happy with AIM until it decided to stop working in chat for weeks.

For those using mIRC, I've figured out how to both set it to flash and use colors. To set it to flash, do the following:
Tools>Options>IRC>Options>Flash on Message (click all three).
Colors are a bit trickier, but grab me online and I'll explain it. Just that change alone seems to be making IRC more tolerable for some.

Updated, because I just realized we never did once AIM stopped being stupid.
Chat room is back to being good ol' dzchat on AIM.
