Month 2, week 1, day 2. Open."In the criminal justice system, the smallest details of a crime scene can solve a case. In New York City, each crime scene is investigated by the Crime Scene Investigations unit. These are their stories." Pee-Dee arrived back from Gillanan III yesterday. She has turned in the collected reports and made a stop by MSE to take care of a few things. Then she went to take advantage of the fact she's in the future. Now, she's perched on the back of a couch, watching Law and Order: CSI in the lounge with the best viewscreen.

Nightbeat strolls into the lounge as he comes off his Q-deck watch.
"Hiya dollface," he greets, taking a seat on the couch. The detective quickly becomes absorbed in the drama on the screen, falling silent and watching with rapt attention for all of about five minutes.
"The brother's girlfriend did it," he states. "The corpse was dragged there and the bullet wounds were inflicted post-mortem."

"I can't tell if you're brilliant or nuts1," Pee-Dee says, not taking her optics off the show. Sarah Carter has some sort of surprise evidence to present to her boss-
Oh, the bullet wounds were inflicted post-mortem.
"Maybe they're right, everything they say about you,2" she allows.

Nightbeat leans back on the sofa to get an (upside-down) look at Pee-Dee. "You're a beat cop and you spend all your free time watching this stuff. You should know this. A gunshot wound to that part of the body on a human would leave a blood spatter if the victim was alive." He straightens back out to watch the program. He wants to see if he's interpreted the evidence right. He might not have. He's been wrong before, once or twice.
"If cases were always this interesting in real life we wouldn't have time for anything else," he comments.

"If they did their research," Pee-Dee points out. She watches a lot of cop shows, she knows full well they sometimes sacrifice reality for story. She shrugs and concedes, "You're right. That was sloppy of me."
She frowns as they go to arrest the brother's girlfriend. "Left field1.... A crime of passion is never pure, and it's certainly not simple.2" Her optics narrow. "She was weak and he used her. That really pisses me off.3"
"War is this interesting, and we have plenty of time to stand watches."

Nightbeat snorts derisively. "War ain't interesting. Peace is interesting. I remember a time when every other case I investigated wasn't a Vos/Tarn hate crime. Or when gathering evidence didn't mean scraping the paste that used to be some poor human or Nebulan off a Seeker's foot. I'd kill to have cases like this. Murder kills less people than war," he says, trailing off into an incoherent grumble.

Pee-Dee flicks one of Nightbeat's ears and sing-songs, "We do what we can, because we must, for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead."1

"Careful with those photon pistols, they'll go off if you keep playin' with them," Nightbeat warns. He sighs. "You're right. We've got to do the job, whatever it is, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Given the choice, wouldn't you rather deal with domestic disputes and day to day scrap instead of chasing Screwdriver?" the detective says by way of comparison. (What to Junkions have domestic disputes over, anyway? Probably what show to watch.)

"Those are guns?" Ooh! Oooooooh! Pee-Dee leans over, an omnitool appearing in one hand. "How do they come off? They've got to come off, or they wouldn't be much use as a robot or as a car."
She traces the seams of the nearest gun-ear, trying to figure out how it joins with Nightbeat's head. She looks ready to start unscrewing things if she can find a screw.
"Chasing Screwdriver. Fewer headaches. The rules stay the same with her."

"Scrappit, fembot!" Nightbeat exclaims, waving his hand around the side of his head to ward off Pee-Dee. "Keep your hands to yourself, I don't want to get taken apart! They're on standard Type 3 subspace docking clamps, if it matters."
He nods at the Junkion's preferring to chase Screwdriver. "I guess I can understand that. I'd rather have the rules change constantly than deal with a triple-digit body count."
Oh look, the cops on TV are having Unresolved Sexual Tension.

Pee-Dee pouts. "I'd put you back together afterward! Good as new! Better than new!"
It is probably a bad thing she still doesn't understand the concept of pain.
She does settle back, omnitool disappearing back into her leg. "Standard Type 3? Hnh. You know those come off pretty easy, right? Just gotta depolarize the wave-harmonies."
That part was just technobabble. Also, her definition of 'pretty easy' is warped.
"Your rules don't change as much as ours do," she says quietly, her attention turning back to the screen just in time for another narrow miss at asking her partner on a date. "Oh, for the love of- Kiss her, you fool!"

"Of course they come off easy, I have to be able to take the pistols off my head when I want to use them," Nightbeat grumps, settling back down into the couch with his arms crossed.
"What's going on? She likes him but he doesn't like her or something?"

"But so can other people," Pee-Dee points out. This is clearly a grievous flaw that could be fixed easily with a little thought, right? Right?
"He thinks she's a ditz. She thinks he's a jerk but with the Grave Digger arc, she's gotten to see more sides than just the 'professional police detective' side she usually sees on the job. And he saw her take apart two Mafia thugs with her bare hands." Pee-Dee says that last part as if it's totally obvious why he now finds her attractive. "But they're partners, and I think he's technically her superior? I don't know, they only use that when it's convenient to the plot. So they're not supposed to, and I think he has an ex-wife and a bitter custody battle going on right now, and she's got terrible taste in men. If they're not jerks, they're criminals. Sometimes they're both."
All this, and they solve murders too!

"If it let some camshaft close enough to grab my own gun off my head in the middle of a fight, then I deserve to get shot," Nightbeat opines. It's only happened once or twice, anyway. That's no reason to get all worked up and start changing things around.
The detective nods along through the explanation. "So he's a jerk, then." There's a pause where he just watches the monitor for a while. "I don't suppose you'd mind re-watching the one where she beats up the two guys barehanded?" he asks hopefully.

Pee-Dee shrugs. "Two a.m. justice - not always conducive to wisdom."1
Wait, did Nightbeat really just ask her if she'd mind re-watching an episode of a cop show? Seriously? Scornfully, she says, "Duh."
She hits stop as soon as the credits start rolling, switches out disks, and clicks over to play 'Forget-Me-Not'.
