"Well, the sooner we can find it, the sooner we can get it back to him. Unfortunately, these things take time, and we're looking fairly blind. There's a lot of purple mechs out there." Pee-Dee looks sad and tired.
She's going to wait and see if the tenant volunteers anything before spelling out that he could be helpful.

Nightbeat raises an eyebrow, then makes exaggerated motions of looking back and forth, as though to make sure he's not overheard. "The tenant tells you that a guy named Screwloose who lives in a building three streets over is purple."

Pee-Dee makes a time-out gesture. She waits for Nightbeat to acknowledge, then starts ticking off points on her fingers.
"One, robbery. Safe's been cleaned out, gold-plated electrum-" she upticks her optics at that, "-statuette of value to someone missing.
"Two, neighbor says he saw a purple 'bot leaving in a hurry. Purple paint traces on the forced-open door and in the safe.
"Three, tenant is only slightly less shifty than Peter Lorre. Really wants that statuette. Doesn't seem particularly worried about the money.
"Four, tenant says there's a purple 'bot named Screwloose in a building three streets over.
"Five, I don't know any of these people from a hole in the ground, so I need to visit the local bar and talk to folks."
Point number five reveals some interesting blindspots - namely, those involving electronic surveillance and records. No inquiry if the building has its own security systems, no thought of even checking to see if there's any records on any of the people involved.

Nightbeat checks off some additional points on his own digits. "Six, as much fun as it would be, the setting for our little play-acting thing here isn't Earth in the 1920's, so some sort of recording device might have caught the robbery happening. You should check if the building has security cameras. Heck, under Decepticon law, you can do a dump of the visual buffers on any witnesses or suspects. Be glad this isn't Kaon.
Six, there might be someone in your department who knows this particular beat better than you. You don't need to work alone if you just want background on the local scrapheaps," he advises.
You of all people advising someone not to go haring off on their own . . . Muzzle interjects.
That's what you're for, Nightbeat responds.

"Oh!" Pee-Dee snaps her fingers. "That's right, Cybertron records things. -- wait, I can get a dump of people's visual buffers for the last few hours? Cooool!"
She doesn't really comment on the second part.

Nightbeat tilts his head. "No, because this isn't taking place in Decepticon territory. As useful a law enforcement tool as that would be, it's also a violation of a sentient being's basic right to privacy. Autobot law doesn't permit it." Which is not to say Nightbeat hasn't quietly done it once or twice to a greasetrap he was interrogating, but Nightbeat is a loose cannon cop who doesn't play by the rules, and he doesn't make a habit of doing that sort of thing if he has another option.

'Right to privacy' is not really something that registers with Junkions. They have other rights. Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. To remain silent. To par-tay!
"Why not?" she asks, curious.
OOC: Given how little we know about Junkions canonically, the 'right to privacy' thing may only apply in Pee-Dee's particular iteration of reality. It's up to any individual Junkion player.[/size]

Nightbeat cycles his unseen optics in a blink. "Why not?" He has to consider that for a moment. Some things are just so wrong on a gut (fuel tank?) level that actually explaining why they are wrong is difficult. He figures he'll make sure they're even on the same wavelength before he starts getting deep into philosophy.
"Did you have a concept of privacy back on Junk?"

"Yes." Pee-Dee cuts her mouth against itself, then explains what she means. Because even when they use the same words, she can miscommunicate pretty badly with Cybertronians. "Secrets. Love affairs. Things that are not for everyone. You go off to be by yourself, or hide whatever, or just don't bring it up."

"Okay, so what if you're on your way back from visiting your beau," Nightbeat's inflection indicates said visit likely involves more than energon and TV, "and you witness a crime being commited. And the cops decide they want to download your optic buffer."

"They'd get an eyeful." Pee-Dee smirks.

Nightbeat facepalms. "Okay, in Autobot society, it's generally assumed that not even the police are entitled to an eyeful unless you choose to give it to them; so it's considered wrong to invade someone's privacy that way."

Pee-Dee nods. "All right then."
Nightbeat is the expert on Autobot society here, and if he says it is considered wrong, then she will consider it wrong as long as she's living in Autobot society.
"So I can't get a dump of his optic buffer because that's wrong," she ticks off on a finger. "I can, and should, check his records and talk to any other cop who might know the area."

"Right," Nightbeat says, nodding. "Listen, can we continue this in the lounge or something? I feel like a tool standing here in the hall." Plus if they're in the lounge he can have some energon and get a mild overcharge going while they talk.
