"The eggheads find more purple paint of the same shade, more of the same fuel traces, and they tell you that judging from the forensic evidence," Nightbeat waves a hand vaguely, indicating that magic has taken place, "the perp went into the back room of the apartment before coming back out to the front room with the hidden wall safe. Also, they're 90% certain there was never a statuette of any kind on the table where vic said it was."

"What's in the back room?"

Nightbeat shrugs. "A recharging berth, some holoposters on the walls, a personal net terminal, a pile of music tapes scattered around the floor. A couple stains that the eggheads tell you are oil and years old," because he knows she will ask about the stains if he gives her half a chance, "nothing much interesting."

If this was real, if Pee-Dee was standing in that room, she would know what to do. But listening to Nightbeat describe things to her- that's hard.
"What looks out of place?"

Nightbeat doesn't hesitate before replying "Nothing seems out of place. It's like the back room was barely searched."

"Either checking to see no one was home or found what he was looking for right away." Pee-Dee considers things. "Hnnnnnnh."

"Don't forget that everything that was actually taken, as far as anyone knows, came out of the wall safe," Nightbeat reminds.

"As far as anyone knows," Pee-Dee counters. She gets up to pace around, wheels turning irritably. "If this was Junk," she says, "I'd have an idea of who to talk to, because I'd know who these people all are. But barring that, I'd settle in to listen and see what kind of rumors there are to hear."

"It takes some amount of settling in, but the rumor floating around, and the word down at the precinct, is that there may be Decepticon activity in the area. Covert ops type stuff."

Pee-Dee stops. Her charm brightens, dims, extinguishes. "What was in that safe?"
She turns smartly on her heel. "There's got to be some way to figure that out without having to rely on what the owner's been telling me."

Nightbeat watches Pee-Dee pace, his face a mask. He's beginning to think he shouldn't have given her this exercise for their first one.
"Who's your prime suspect? Where's the motive?"

He probably shouldn't have, no. Pee-Dee is both very physical and used to knowing the people involved. There's a lot to be said for being able to look someone in the optic and smile.
"On the surface, it's a standard breaking-and-entering," she says. "We've even got footage of who did it. But s/he doesn't match anyone we know. Then there's this fishiness with the electrum-plated statuette and apparently Decepticon undercover activity."

Nightbeat sometimes falls into the trap of forgetting that not everyone is Cybertron's greatest detective. It's like Perceptor and talking science all the time, only for detectoring. He rubs his chin thoughtfully. "Okay, let's work off the assumption that the electrum-plated statuette is a complete fabrication, and the victim made it up to try and somehow collect some sort of insurance money because he is low-life scum. Let's also assume that Decepticons are involved in the robbery. Where does that leave us?"

"Knew that already. If Decepticons are involved, well, why are they involved?" She perches on the edge of a chair. "What's his connection to the Decepticons? What do they want with his money or whatever's in the safe? Drinking money?"
Pee-Dee gets up and paces around again. "See, we know what he looks like. Assuming he kept that body-form, mind, and we know he is purple, assuming he kept that color. We know he went in, looked in the back, went to the safe, got his stuff. We know he went out the back and turned into a hovercraft and hovered off. We know none of the locals say they recognize him."
She pauses, tilts her head slightly. "Do the cameras know him?" No, wait, those are not the right words. "Have other cameras seen him?"

"I can tell you right now, if the 'Cons have a reason to agree to a ceasefire, or some sort of temporary peace accord, they aren't going to an act of war like an agent in enemy territory to steal drinking money. They'd be doing something more important than that. Something that would probably be way over the victim's head," Nightbeat says.
"A few other cameras have spotted the perp, yes. Judging by where they were and when they saw him, he seemed to have been heading for neutral territory. The kind of place you go when you don't want to be found."
