The door is swinging shut behind Xavier when Petunia lands behind him, and the sweet snap brings a cruel grin to his lips. He hurries out into the spitting raining, a limp in his stride, but the pain quickly subsides. Still, he continues to affect a limp for the moment as he jogs away from the apartment complex and digs through his backpack for the rain slicker.
If his pursuer broke her ankle, it should give him a fair head start. Now if he could just find an alley to disappear down...

Petunia screws her eyes shut against the pain and takes a tentative step. Green-red flares across the red-black inside her eyelids. It hurts! Had she ever known anything could hurt this much?
She doesn't have time for this. Petunia grits her teeth, opens her eyes, and hobbles towards the door. Every step hurts less; by the time she shoves the door open, it's almost bearable.
Rain drips through her hair as she glances up and down the street. As soon as she spots him, she's off after Mr. Paige, never mind the slick sidewalks.
If he looks back quickly, Xavier might see this redhead also losing her limp as she moves.

Xavier glances back, spots the redhead in the rain, cusses. So much for broken ankles. His eyes narrow suspiciously, but he has more important things to think about than the state of his pursuer's ankle, other than how it effects how fast she can chase him. Suitable alley spotted, however!
Ducking into the alley he quickly tugs out his rain slicker and slips it on, tugging the hood over his head and tucking his backpack out of sight under the slick yellow material. He straightens up as he jogs out of the other end of the alley and turns the corner. Losing his affected limp, he joins the other pedestrians on the sidewalk and adopts the quick walking pace of someone who doesn't want to spend too long in the rain, rather than the full out run of someone being chased.

By the time Petunia reaches the alley, Xavier has already changed into his rainslicker and disappeared into the crowd. She stares down the alley, curses. He's gone. The creepy redhead is gone.
The other creepy redhead turns and stalks back towards Elly's apartment.

There is also a creepy raven-haired lady wandering around. She decides to tail the creepy redheaded lady for a while.
It's a good night for creeps.

Petunia wanders back to the apartment and lets herself into the stairwell. Instead of going upstairs, though, she sits down on the bottom step and props her ankle up over the opposite knee.
She feels it carefully with her fingers, twists and flexes it, and her frown gets more and more puzzled.

Someone on the step just behind Det. Dahlia asks, "If you're here, who is with Miss Winston?"
It's Esprit, peering down at her partner.

If Petunia had super-strength, she'd have just broken her own ankle with that jerk. Agh, Esprit. "A locked door, hopefully."
She lets out a long breath. "Do you have a knife?"

A mild expression of dubiousness settles itself upon Esprit's face like fog upon a highway. A locked door is not going to do much is there is real danger.
She moves down a few steps to stand in front of Det. Dahlia on the landing. Esprit shakes her head. No, she does not carry a knife. Esprit has guns, a flashlight, handcuffs, a walkie-talkie, a cellphone, some evidence baggies, and a few other assorted things, but not a knife. Her eyes ask, Why?

"If you jump from..." Petunia tips her head back to look up the stairwell, then points. "-there to here, you'd probably break your ankle, right?"

Esprit considers the jump and then nods. Probably. Esprit hasn't studied parkour. Someone skilled could make that jump, she thinks. There is muscle 'memory'. Maybe Det. Dahlia did parkour before she lost her memories?
Esprit sits down next to Det. Dahlia on the step and peers at her ankle. Det. Dahlia doesn't seem panicky, so she probably assumes that the danger has passed. Whoever Det. Dahlia was after must have escaped. That's a shame.

"Something cracked when I landed," Petunia says quietly, still running her fingertips over her ankle. "But he made the same jump I did, and he could still run. He did run. Outran me."
Try as she might, she can't feel any crack or even very much pain.
"Pain isn't real unless you invoke it," she murmurs. "How can you suffer if you don't believe?1"

"Want me to get you to a hospital?" Esprit asks. Det. Dahlia cracked her ankle and then ran on it. She might need medical help. As for the man she was pursuing...
"He might be trained in some kind of gymnastics." The first rule of the MCU is to never be willingly without a weapon to assume a mundane explanation until proven otherwise.

"That's probably it." Petunia rolls her sock back up and her pants-leg down. "I don't think I need a hospital. Nothing hurts or feels broken. See?"
She flexes her ankle to its fullest extent then rotates it, showing not a bit of pain. Given Dahlia's usual reaction to things like whacking her hand against a doorframe, it's doubtful she's even capable of hiding it if she was in pain.

Esprit looks at Det. Dahlia's ankle thoughtfully. She points out, "Could have pinched a nerve. Could have dislocated something and popped it back in. Instead, you," she raises a finger and points at Det. Dahlia's chest, "are thinking you're a freak."
Every time something a bit weird happens, people start to assume that they simply must be meta. That's why Det. Dahlia was asking about the knife, isn't it? She's gotten it into her head that she must be a regenerator and wants to test it.
Esprite considers how Det. Dahlia was found, the victim of a motorcycle crash. What if Det. Dahlia is a regenerator?
