Skywarp doesn't back down from Starscream's stare; he just draws himself up more formally. Wind Sheer, noting the change in posture, turns to focus on Starscream as well, though he's not being asked anything. He doesn't think Starscream even has a radio band for him, unless Skywarp has given it. Maybe he should delicately broach the topic of better communication with his new partner later.
//I'd say we averaged around… twelve or thirteen,// Skywarp answers after going over all the faces he recalls seeing between his stints in bumper car hell. //Between accidental deaths and executions. It's… possible we were being pared down or selected through the – er, games for something more.// It was a notion Skywarp had picked up based on what he was tasked with during his stay, on the directives given him. They were better than the alternative he'd seen in those cold red eyes.

//What makes you say that? Just a hunch or something more? You are, unfortunately, our best source of intelligence on this enemy.//
Starscream paces over the hull, seemingly distracted, before returning his attention to Skywarp. //Is there anything else you think I should know?//

//…I had few responsibilities,// Skywarp explains, and if he sounds as though he's choosing his words carefully, it's because he wants to make what he says as clear as possible, not out of censure. //And they centred on bringing those I or Wind Sheer found awakened in the installation to a room where they would be examined. Sometimes rendered for parts, other times added to the ranks. In all honesty, sir, I was only given criteria to match, not the reasoning behind it.//
This next bit, he's uncertain enough about it that Wind Sheer feels the faint tremor through his shoulders.
//Permission to offer my opinion on the matter, sir?// Skywarp ventures. Starscream has been asking for as much hard fact as can be offered so far. If he wants an opinion is another matter entirely.

The current Decepticon leader cycles his air intakes, taking a deep breath and then expelling it, vapor visible in the vacuum. It doesn't do to show fear before his subordinates. As far as anyone needs to know, Starscream isn't afraid of monsters. Even monsters that effortlessly broke his jaw and made his heavy frontline warriors look like rank amateurs.
//Yes, Skywarp, I want your opinion,// he says carefully, letting an appropriate amount of anger creep into his tone.

//Apologies, sir,// Skywarp says and snaps back to full attention. That brimming anger is as good a reprimand as would be a fist in the face. A soldier learned to pay attention to things like that under Megatron's command. //I hesitate to forward anything non-factual. But, sir,// and he relaxes just slightly, //I think we were just a distraction. All of us there… the entire installation. He has bigger goals, I'm sure – something else planned.// After all, Overlord left. The park wasn't that important. A jumping off point, maybe a toehold at best in terms of strategic importance.

//But no idea of what those plans might be,// Starscream transmits flatly. It's almost more a statement than a question. He curses to himself, silent in the vacuum. //I cannot abide the idea of a powerful enemy loose at an unknown location with unknown goals.//

Skywarp is acutely aware of his failure here – his failure to provide anything substantive or helpful, to offer any useful intelligence to his commander. He stifles a wince. If only he'd done a better job of ingratiating himself with Overlord. Could he have? He remembers how well Overlord seemed to figure him out with hardly a word said and he's suddenly not so sure the madman wouldn't have seen through him.
//Sir,// he says without apologising again, because what would be the use? He drops to one knee so quickly Wind Sheer nearly loses his grip and briefly "hangs", inverted with his tiny feet kicking futilely to push him back down to safety.

Starscream makes a disgusted noise that no-one can hear in the vacuum, puffing out a cloud of ice crystals. //Get up, Skywarp. I'm not Megatron; I don't need my warriors to grovel at my feet to inflate my ego. If you fail through fault of your own, I expect you to improve. If you fail repeatedly, you can expect punishment. If you betray our cause, you can expect to be made an example of. You don't need to fear me hurting you due to a bad mood unless you're the one who caused it.// He kicks one taloned foot along the hull. //You survived that lunatic's crazy circus long enough to rendevous with the true Decepticon forces and bring us what intel you could. I do not consider that a failure.//
He turns away from the other jetformer, pushes off from Ship, transforms, and flies away. //Dismissed.//

Starscream's reprimand is the most reasonable, logical, sane thing Skywarp has heard out of a commander for most of his military service. He stares in undisguised shock for a second or two before he catches himself and gets his composure back.
//Yes, sir,// he says and salutes Starscream as the other jet vanishes against the starry backdrop. He's still a little dazed by the developments even by the time he's back in the ship interior with the airlock closing behind him. That really just happened – he just didn't get a sound beating from his commander where he'd have expected it.
Maybe life here won't be quite as terrible as he thought.
