Day 17, sometime after Assault and Battery. Semi-private
Shared labs can be such a pain. Anyone can walk in on and interrupt any private project at any time.
Which is just what Blackarachnia is doing.
"Just who I needed to see," she says to the lab's occupant. She shuts the door behind her. "I have something you might find interesting."
She tosses a datastick toward the other scientist.

Oil Slick glances up from a partially assembled box with lots of nozzles sticking out, then scrambles to catch the datastick - which, given that he has pointy stabby finger-things, it's pretty tricky.
He manages, though, raising a browridge at the she-spider. "Interesting?"

Once Oil Slick checks out the datastick, he'll find a summary of Blackarahnia's mutated download ability, including comparison to her previous standard settings. Also included are the steps she has taken so far to try and reverse the process.
All of these attempts have failed, and those failures are also documented.
"Yes. Interesting. I need a stopgap measure."

Oil Slick peers at the datapad and smirks. "Well, well. This is quite curious."
He looks up at her, curious. "Why me, though? I am a chemist, not a programm--ah, right, stopgap. Hmmn..." The datapad is set aside, and a screen is pulled up that's essentially a combination of Paint and Notepad. Quick typing and sketching occurs.
"It's akin to keeping chemicals out - so there's a few options - a large sphere for mobility, but that does not allow good interaction. There's also anti-rad armor, but that's also rather unwieldy..."
The chemist murmurs, still brainstorming.

"Clothing or additional armor would work. My helmet is an armor piece, and it isn't affected," she says as she straddles a chair and crosses her arms on its back, "but really, I don't want to bulk myself up."
"Something lightweight, thin, like a sprayable or paintable polymer. It doesn't need to be permanent, because as some have pointed out, this can be used to advantage in certain circumstances."
Blackarachnia fiddles with her nails, "I just want the option available to touch people without rendering them unconscious. Otherwise, I'll never be able to pull a medic shift, and Hook will get pissy."

Oil Slick nods knowingly. "Nnnyes, and the last thing we need is more things to irritate Hook..." he says, keying up a few more things.
"Perhaps an intelligent suit..." he says, displaying some potential material choices, and a hologram of one of the nanobots Tarantulas was using to try and infect Pz-Zazzians with some kind of mind control. "Tarantulas was working on these nanites for something that I do not believe he ever got off the ground. Perhaps they might work for controlling a potential suit's coverage with some programmed commands issued over a radio band..."
He pauses.
"Unless you object to having a suit full of nanites." Do creepy-crawlies get weirded out by other creepy-crawlies?

After staring at Oil Slick for several seconds, the spider snorts, "A suit made of nanites. Really. Can we say 'Security risk?' I think we can."
"So no, I'd rather not have something which could be hacked or manipulated by someone else, thank you very much."
Blackarachnia pulls out a small can and sprays the contents on her hand and forearm. Her skin is coated in a purple substance that is moderately thick. She flexes her fingers and the coating creases and stretches, but doesn't break. It's obvious that the substance would hamper manual dexterity, however.
"Liquid latex. It works, but you can see it has some serious drawbacks. I figure a brilliant chemist like yourself could come up with something clear, lightweight, and easily applicable that does the same job."

You say 'security risk', Oil Slick says 'potential research avenue'.
He shrugs. "Very well - just attempting to use available resources..." he says, then wipes most of the slate clean. "It will take some doing, but I suppose I can make that happen."
A few chemicals are brought out, and mixed, then heated...
---
A brief bit of time passes, and Oil Slick is now loading the first shot at Blackarachnia's desired compound into an atomizer sprayer. "Let me see your hand." Provided Blackarachnia complies, he will then spray her hand and forearm down as she did to herself earlier.

Blackarachnia does let Oil Slick spray her hand, albeit a bit hesitantly. She still has reservations about trusting the mad chemist.
Holding her hand up to the light, she studies it. There's an... odd feeling to the substance. It reminds her of her webbing but not, and she can't quite suppress a twitch of distaste. Other than a slight satiny sheen, the coating is invisible. She flexes her hand, twists and contorts it, and finds her dexterity unhampered.
"Seems workable. Let's see if it does the trick," she says as she reaches for Oil Slick's arm.

Oil Slick draws the sprayer back, and starts to recoil from her reach, but allows it. Sadly, there is no one else to serve as the guinea pig.
And it would not inspire much confidence if he doubted his own work. And letting Blackarachnia have faith in the chemist's work is good - if she does not fix this issue, she will need to come to Oil Slick more and more for more of this chemical, and having someone who owes you a favor is always a good thing...
The spray appears to work - Oil Slick feels no reaction.

Blackarachnia will only be dependent on Oil Slick until she can figure out how to duplicate the formula. She's not a chemist and can't create it from scratch, but she knows enough to be able to copy it. At least, she hopes she does. Being beholden to Oil Slick does not work well with Blackarachnia's plans.
When nothing happens, she nods in approval. "I think that will do. What's the estimated degradation time? And if I want it off before then, what solvent should I use?"

"Around five days with minimal wear - depending on how active you plan on being, that will go down a bit quicker. The joints will go first, of course," he answers, palm open in an explaining motion.
"As for a good solvent to get it off prematurely - a good basic scrubdown should take care of things if you're not in a hurry. Stronger detergents will work faster, acetone moreso."

Nodding again, Blackarachnia says, "That's workable. Can you work up a decent supply by then end of the day? Enough for say, a half dozen applications?"
The subject of payment hasn't come up yet, but she's sure it will.

Oil Slick nods. "Of course..."
Then he looks over at her, smirking. "However, I must ask - what am I getting out of this little favor?"

Shrugging a shoulder, she says, "What do you want? It's not like I have much in the way of trade goods."
Blackarachnia leans against the wall and studies her fingertips.
