The Autobots back where he comes from don't! Not usually anyway. The universe is totally unfair.
"Ack! Gah!" Mayday tries to press the buttons in time to the screen's prompts, he really does, but he keeps forgetting which button is where and ends up glancing frantically between the screen and his controller, trying to keep up. As the other puppy pairs pull ahead - the little blue whose existence taunts Breakaway taking the lead - he resorts to smashing buttons at random. Poor Monstro flails grotesquely next to his stubby-legged partner, a blur of misshapen limbs and buzzing tail and flying slobber.
"Nnnyaaugh!" He is failing their team!

If the Autobots in Mayday's reality didn't want to fight Decepticons, they shouldn't have remixed the G1 theme song and made it their own. Fighting Decepticons is one of, like, only three actual lyrics in it.
Breakaway is actually pretty good at the required button-mashing, managing to keep time with the prompts pretty well. However, since Mayday is flailing, as is his wont, this just leaves their bizarre Combiner puppy going in sad circles as one half tries to go forward and the other doesn't. The jetformer can't help but laugh a little.

"Why are you laughing?" Mayday whines. "We're losing!"
Blue-puppy and his pal just crossed the finish line! But the laughter is kind of contagious and the looping puppies are pretty ridiculous looking, so after given a rather undignified snort, Mayday ends up in a fit of slightly nervous giggles. He actually manages to press the right button at the right time by accident a few times, sending their monstrosity lurching forward a few paces before returning to circling.
Trying, and failing, to be a bit more serious, he manages to get out, "B-being a combiner is hard."

"I'm laughing because this is ridiculous," Breakaway says, stifling his giggles.
"Yeah. I dunno how Jetfire and Jetstorm manage it, let alone all the five and six-bot teams. Maybe that's why so many of them seem a little . . . off," he muses, turning away from the screen to watch Mayday.
"Maybe try holding the controller differently or something?" he suggests.

Mayday shakes his head, suppressing more laughter with a sort of 'gsnrrrk' sound.
"Five and six bot combiners. I just can't imagine it. The whole combining thing at all seems crazy to me. We don't really have 'em back in my universe. Er. Other than those twins. But they're not exactly- yeah." He shakes his head. "All those people, plugging their minds and bodies together..." He gives a little shudder. "I'll stick with just, uh, 'combining' with non-sentient technology, thank you very much."
He pouts in frustration at his controller. "I keep forgetting which buttons go where when I'm looking at the screen!" And the more he panics over failing, the more he forgets!
Since the game is apparently against people explicitly losing, it's going to keep the race going until they pass the finish line and it can reward them 4th place or until one of them aborts.

Breakaway is normally hypercompetitive, but he can't bring himself to feel angry at Mayday for losing. The little Autobot would probably have some sort of fit and have to go to sick bay, and then Breakaway would be in deep slag with the brass.
"Hey, speaking of which, would it be easier for you to just plug directly into the computer instead of using the controller? Maybe there's an adapter somewhere you can use, since the buttons are giving you trouble."
You can't have little kids actually losing a video game. It might teach them difficult things, like how sometimes your best isn't good enough no matter what you do.

That would be horrible! Mayday would be mortified if Breakaway got in trouble because of him. He's not worth people getting in trouble over!
"Well, that, um... hm." He looks contemplative. "Er, would that be considered cheating?" After all, plugging into a ship basically gives him a +1 to piloting. Wouldn't plugging into the game system give him a +1 to gaming?
Still, he gets up to eye the controller ports on the computer, the engineering gears in his head a-turning. He does keep some spare connecters fit for the port in his head on hand in case he ever needs to splice together a hook-up or fix one of the piloting stations...

Mayday is totally worth getting in trouble over, just not for silly things.
"There's only the two of us playing, and I'm the one who suggested it. Who's getting cheated? When your missiles aren't working you switch to guns," the jetformer says, pausing the game for a moment. The pause menu has a puppy on it, naturally.

That is surely crazy talk!
Mayday looks contemplative for a moment then shrugs. "Well, if you say so!" Without further ado, he whips out several tools and begins disassembling his controller. He'll build another one later or something. For now he's going to splice some of the components and the cord together with a plug that fits his head. Go, go, engineering improv!

It's not crazy talk at all! Breakaway used to get in trouble all the time back home. It's just he comes from a very grimdark military reality, where he is one of the most laid-back guys. Here he is less laid-back in comparison, because people tend to be less face-rippy. Mayday is worth getting into trouble over if it means Mayday stays out of some sort of trouble.
The jetformer blinks. "I didn't think you were gonna take the controller apart," he says, leaning closer to watch.

Clearly Mayday needs to stay out of trouble to keep Breakdown out of trouble. Well, more trouble than he's already gotten in already. It'll probably be hard to top getting the 2IC and several section heads angry at him. Not that he wants to get in trouble, oh no, very much not.
"Well, I need the plug that goes into the computer to attach to the plug that fits in my head, and this was the fastest way I could think of." His nimble fingers work quickly with tools and wires. "I'll, uh, fix it later..."
Holding up his finishes handiwork to eye it skeptically, he gives a little shrug and opens up the port in the back of his head, plugging into it. One of his optics twitches and he shudders slightly. Shaking his head, he says, "That's a bit... weird."

Keeping Breakaway out of trouble is a lost cause. The only reason he hasn't buzzed the tower yet is because they don't have one.
"You can take that apart, use the parts for something else, and then put it back together? And you've never even seen it before?" Breakaway probably shouldn't be surprised, given that Mayday was with him for the Amoeba Incident, but he is impressed nonetheless. "Man, and I'm always proud of myself when it takes me less than a day to do weapon maintenance on my own systems."
"Weird? Is it bad-weird? You okay?" he asks.

Mayday looks extremely bashful at Breakaway's admiration of his mechanical skills, folding in on himself slightly. It's not that he dislikes praise or anything, in fact it kind of gives him little tingles of happiness, he just doesn't think he deserves compliments. At least not for silly things.
He distracts himself from his awkwardness by adjusting to the new interface, managing to figure out how to scroll through the pause menu. "Um, just, uh. Weird-weird. I'm use to connecting to, er, more sophisticated systems." After a brief pause he adds, with a slight nervous chuckle, "And, uh, y'know, it's nothing really. I mean, it's just a simple user-input device, not like I'm trying to rewire the computer on a whim or something..."

Mayday is so adorable when he's self-deprecating. He triggers all of Breakaway's older-brotherly instincts. Breakaway wants to hug Mayday, and teach him to play baseball, and pass on the stash of questionable magazines hidden under his berth. Not that he has such a stash. If he did, though, he would pass it on to Mayday.
The jetformer just shrugs and watches the pause menu scroll. "Looks like you've got it figured out, anyway." Then he twitches a thumb on the controller to scroll the pause menu in the opposite direction, just to screw with the little bike.

Mayday's not sure what he would do with affectionate touching, games that involve projectiles being thrown or knocked at him, or questionable magazines. Possibly freak out. That does seem to be his go-to reaction when all else fails. Big brother Breakaway can protect him from mean schoolyard bullies whenever he wants, though!
He nods. "Yeah, I got it- hey!" He wrestles with Breakaway for control of the scroll menu in a rather ridiculous display of competitiveness. "Um, so, new race?"
