A lot of people have bemoaned the ProBoards lack of an email notification system. Guess what? Turns out it does have one, but it's not very intuitive.
Go to your Profile. Click on Bookmarks. Click on Manage Bookmarks. Change your default notification setting to Email. Click Update Bookmarks and Preferences. From that point on, you can set any thread to email notification by bookmarking it (an option along the top bar of a thread).
You can also click the box below the text entry field when you're starting a new thread or using the full reply layout (instead of the Quick Reply), and have it bookmarked that way.
I still don't know of any way to receive email notification for PMs. Sorry.
I figured this out while trying to find a way to back up the boards. I'm still not seeing a way. If anyone knows of some sort of external utility program I can use to do that instead, however, I'd be eternally grateful.

Actually, if you go to your PM mailbox for each of your characters, there is a button by "back up messages" for preferences. Under that you have the option of setting up to receive e-mails whenever you get a PM. The default is NO.
I knew there was a way..but had to poke my brain to remember.

Ah! Thank you, Mirage! I think that'll make a few people pretty happy.
