Scourge gives Rook a bit more time, and then he asks, "What are your visual settings? Do you look for changes from frame to frame? Do you focus on edges or on overall shapes?"
The sad thing about most Transformers not smoking is that it makes it hard to snipe the smokers, since there aren't any.

Kup smokes, if you catch him in the right continuity. So does Swerve, probably, if you get him angry enough.
"I look for details, mostly. Things to remember for later. Faces, expressions, where things are in a room. I've never really looked at things in terms of combat and response times outside of a duel." Clearly he'll have to start.

Scourge explains, voice softer than it usually is, "In battle, you don;t have nice, obvious targets like that. You'll have moving targets of irregular sizes and shapes, and they'll be trying to be hard to hit. Until you've learned better, you're going to want to try for torso shots. Lots of important components in there, and it's harder to miss than extremities."

Rook raises one eyeridge and smirks, still facing downrange, away from Scourge. He had no idea he came off as quite that clueless.
"I'm aware that battle is more complex than the shooting range, Lord Scourge, but I thank you for the advice. I'm going to continue working on fundamentals before I graduate to simulated combat."

"I'm saying that pattern recognition is fundamental," Scourge corrects mildly, though there's a slight edge to his voice. "Don't look for the centre of the target. Look for the edge between white and red and then aim inward relative to that edge. Edges show up well."

"Ah, I apologize. I mistook the intent of your statement. I'll certainly make pattern recognition a priority." Thus saying, Rook subvocalizes, muttering to himself, or more accurately, to his onboard computer. Beast Wars guys have to do that sometimes. He's actually fiddling with the contrast settings on his optics.
"I don't suppose you have any advice about melee combat, as long as we're on the subject?" he inquires.

Scourge can't make fun of Rook for talking to his computer. Scourge has to shout just to access most of his weapons and transform. He finds it really annoying.
He throws his head back, laughs, and stands to his full height at Rook's inquiry. Scourge teases, clearly in a good humour, "Aside from 'don't get into it with me'? Oh, where could I start..."
Scourge paces, rubbing the back of his helmet.

Rook blinks and dilates his optics as they reset. He can't see as much detail now, but objects certainly stand out from the background. He wonders if this is how combat 'bots see all the time.
"Really?" the crow says, equally amused. "I may be a poor shot, but I'm pretty decent with a blade, Lord Scourge. I might be able to hold my own against you for a while if you were my size." He doesn't have any illusions about being able to beat Scourge, but it'd be fun to try.

Depends on the combat 'bot!
Scourge apparently has wire drawings of stuff on his HUD.
He snickers and replies, "And how good are you disarmed?"
Because Scourge is just about as dangerous without his sword as he is with it. Getting into grappling fights with Optimus Prime was a common thing in his reality. They can find out in the training room, though, where Rook could be any size at all!

Transformer HUDs tend toward the weird. Rattrap's has a piece of cheese on it.
"Admittedly, I'm not much at unarmed combat," Rook says in response to Scourge's query. Which is why he carries extra weapons in subspace.

Scourge would like to be able to say that he has killed dozens of Autobots with his bare hands. He hasn't, though. He's sure he could! He just hasn't. Scourge is a boss in the sim room, though.
He points out, "Then a cunning opponent will disarm you, if he figured that out. Either don't let him figure it out or learn to throw a punch."

"Denying an opponent vital information sounds more amusing than punching him, though I suppose I should learn to do that as well," Rook admits. So much he doesn't know about killing people! The Autobots here probably won't care if he ruins their reputations.
"Shall we adjourn to the sim room? Crossing swords with you would be a refreshing break from target practice, if you've the time."

"Mmm. Yes. 'Both' is the correct answer," Scourge notes.
Some of the Autobots might care. Where is Tracks when you need him?
He snickers a bit more. "Oh, very well." Been a while since Scourge had a live opponent with a blade of his own!

Rook isn't entirely sure what Scourge is so very amused about, unless it's the prospect of kicking his aft. As he holsters his pistol and heads out training room door, the crow makes up his mind that even if Scourge wins, he's going to make sure that the tanker isn't laughing once they're done.

No, Scourge will be rolling over, laughing.
Scourge looks over at Rook and taps away at the sim room computer, trying to figure how to Make Rook Bigger. Or maybe Make Scourge Smaller. Without a context, one's the same as the other. This will take just a little of programming...
