Kate studies Tessan hard at the strange turns of phrases and even stranger pauses.
She makes a note that the path was closed, because while she's pretty sure there'd be a lot more worry and fuss if it weren't, in all the confused stories and whatnot, no one had made it clear before now.
"Still any of 'em down there?" she asks.

Costigan arches an eyebrow again. "Ah can't say as we stopped to check resumés when we ran into the first bunch of fishmen. It was a small patrol, they tried to kill us while announcing their intentions kinda loud-like, so Ah pulled my pistol and started shooting. Guess all that training at the range paid off. After seein' her in action, Ah figure Tessan's ex-military, she talks like it and moves like it."
The shakes are gone now; after-action reports--and leaving out details that senior officers just don't need to know about the troops--is old hat. Later, it will strike Donal Costigan that this feeling is very odd, considering he's never been in the military.
"After that, Ah figured we really had to; no offense, but I reckon your procedures would probably require you to seal off the area, and by the time you called someone back in to deal with the flooding, the mine would have been pretty much ruined. Ah didn't get called in in the middle of the night at triple rates to stand by and say, 'Sorry, couldn't help you.' This here situation called for my best effort, and it weren't just money. Joe Mackenzie is the CEO--Ah think he's still on his way here from the U.P.--and I've worked with Joe Mack before. He's good people, works hard, and a good employer. Wouldn't want to see him go bust and these people out of work 'cause I was afraid to do my best. Seriously."
"Did our best to avoid the slimeballs and suss out the situation. Not like we rushed in there to fight them single-handedly." Costigan shrugs. It's true enough; the single-handed battle against the whole camp started after he assessed the rock strata and Tessan started working on the ammo dump.
He shakes his head at Officer Mason's question. "Ah don't know. We definitely set that blast off in a non-OSHA approved manner, and didn't bother to tell them we were going to do it, but Ah didn't see who was in what condition. Flash kinda blinded me for a bit, and Tessan had to guide me out. Ah'm figuring they weren't good for much at the time, or we wouldn't have escaped. Maybe she saw 'em." He glances over at Tessan.

Tessan's eye widen a bit, and she says firmly and deliberately, "I mine."
She is totally not a space robot commando.
Tessan admits, "There might be some of them still up. I could have taken care of them, but they made me sit down."

Esprit decides that both Mr. Costigan and Ms. Toov are being evasive. She says to Sgt. Mason, "We should probably detain these... 'fishmen'."
You know, take them alive for questioning?
"I'll tell Det. Dahlia to be on the alert," she adds, and she moves off to a corner of the room to radio Det. Dahlia and do just that, leaving Sgt. Mason to continue questioning.

Kate inclines her head, agreeing with Esprit, though as the other departs, she calls, "If we don't already have an underwater drone checking things from the other side, make sure they're getting one down there."
She looks back and forth between Shades and Tessan. She has definitely got to get Tessan by herself - there's more than a few things that don't add up about that girl.
She rubs her forehead. "Well, sounds like you both handled things well enough," she admits grudgingly. Then she studies the two. "More than well," she adds. Neither seem to have been badly injured - and of course, the medics would have already taken care of the worst of it, and sent them along if they were that badly damaged. Still, "How you holding up now? What you been through, I can understand it's probably pretty upsetting."

Costigan glances from one cop to the other, looking concerned. "Ah know y'all are equipped for this sort of thing, what with the costumed nutjobs and all, but be careful. The Sub-Atlanticans are out-and-out hostiles--they responded like we were declared enemies and tried to kill us on sight. Ah don't think they'll stop to negotiate with you fellows, and they have laser rifles. We lucked out by catching 'em in tight corridors with short line-of-sight."
At Detective Mason's inquiry, Costigan looks at her and frowns slightly. "Tessan got hurt some, Ah got some scratches," --no, he didn't-- "and I'm still a bit hard of hearing from the blasting. Funny thing, though--when I was in the middle of it, felt almost like a barroom brawl gone bad, or that time when I got caught between the picket line and the strikebreakers. Ah guess the adrenaline just kicked in. Now, Ah'm about twelve hours overdue for bed, and about ready to keel over. Seriously. Ah figure the night after, or the one after that, it'll start hitting me."
And by that he means those recurring nightmares of a monstrous metal devil tearing apart a metal planet inhabited by metal people....

"I want to go back to work," Tessan replies honestly, not seeing anything wrong with her answer, "I don't want to miss BattleNASCAR Galactica later."
She seems entirely unaware that a normal civilian ought to be shell-shocked and horrified by the large number of sapient lives that she has just taken.
Tessan considers. "I could use some coffee? Or Mountain Dew. Or both." Worst mixed drink?

Esprit is still paying attention to the conversation while over in the corner. First, she checks on the drone. Yes, they have one gong. Captain Fanzone hates the underwater drone. The drone operator asks Esprit is she wants to know that the drone did to Captain Fanzone's wife? No, Esprit doesn't.
Then she radios Det. Dahlia to give her a general fill-in on the situation thus far, and she adds one thing, "And that Mr. Donal Costigan, I think he's just... well, you need to see it to understand what I'm talking about."
Esprit watches hm out of her corner of her eyes. Any reaction? He shouldn't be able to hear her, but if he is who she thinks he might be...

Kate studies Tessan for a moment, then looks down at her notepad. "Eh, sure, let's get you some coffee. Or soda. Or whatever. I guess I'm about done here, but I wouldn't mind a cup myself. Of the coffee, I mean." Not so much the coffee soda.
She looks between the two before tapping the tablet once more, then glances back at Esprit. "You got anything else for 'em?"
Either way, Kate does intend to find an excuse to talk to Tessan alone.

Costigan looks mildly annoyed as Det. Hunt talks on the phone. Not over anything she says, but over the fact that he's still getting his hearing back and can't overhear conversations he's used to hearing. He doesn't like not knowing where everyone is around him, where they are heading, etc. It gives him the creepy feeling that someone could just sneak up on him and--
What? Costigan doesn't have any serious enemies, that he knows of. Damn, he needs a night's sleep. His hearing will be better later, and he won't feel so jumpy and paranoid.
"Have Ah mentioned Ah could use about sixteen hours of sleep?" he growls.

Tessan tries to just wander out of the conference room to go find a vending machine and a break room, not quite waiting to see if Det. Hunt has anything more to say. She looks very excited by the prospect of coffee soda.
OOC: Out of thread to go make coffee soda abominations with Sgt. Mason!

"Not for Ms. Toov, sir, but if I could have a moment of Mr. Costigan's time?" Esprit replies.
Ms. Toov is odd, but it is Mr. Costigan that Esprit would really like to talk to alone.

"All right," Kate says as she follows Tessan out. "Keep me updated."
Esprit won't, of course, but Kate doesn't realize this.
OOC: Out of thread.

Shades Costigan looks at Detective Hunt, one eyebrow raised. He still isn't going to get to go home and go to bed yet, is he?
"Well?"

"You remind me of a Hellbender," Esprit says, perfectly neutrally.
That sounds like a cape name, does it? Her accent says that she's from out of town.
